Day 2 of the conference began with an encouraging keynote from L. Maren Wood, who told us about the excellent job prospects for PhD holders.
Later in the day, there were workshops on Leadership Beyond Academia, Identifying Transferable Skills, Negotiating Job Offers, and many others. Panels today ranged from the Non-Profit Sector to Management Consulting and Education to Data Analytics. Associate Dean Rosemary Joyce gave the closing keynote, telling us that in 40 years’ worth of data on the employment of Berkeley PhDs after graduate school, 44% of graduates have gone into tenure-track jobs, 42% of graduates have gone into multiple non-academic careers, and 14% have gone into jobs such as University Administration. “This is the way it’s always been,” she said, “it’s up to us to change the dialogue surrounding it.”
Thank you to everyone who spoke, participated, attended, and otherwise supported this year’s conference! Beyond Academia is for you.
